Dentures

Dentures CarlsbadTooth loss is often attributed to older individuals when, in fact, there are numerous factors that can contribute to a rapid loss of several or even all of your teeth. From poor nutrition to severe tooth decay to facial trauma, these risk factors cannot always be anticipated or prevented.

Losing your smile can be devastating, and yet the modern world has rendered the situation entirely reversible with the development of dentures. Patients seeking a top-rated provider of dentures in Carlsbad will find their answer at Carlsbad Village Dentistry.

What Are Dentures

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and adjacent tissues. They are made of acrylic resin, sometimes in combination with various metals, to perfectly mimic the appearance and structure of an authentic smile. Dentures restore the denture wearer’s natural chewing ability, speech patterns, and the confidence to smile with no reservation once more. They also provide support for facial muscles, greatly enhancing your natural features.

Types of Dentures

There are several types of dentures available to tooth loss patients today: Complete dentures replace all the teeth on your upper and/or lower jaw, while a partial denture fills in the spaces created by missing teeth and prevents healthy teeth from changing position.

Complete dentures are often referred to as “conventional” or “immediate” dentures, as per when they are created and inserted into the mouth. Immediate dentures are inserted immediately after the removal of the remaining teeth. To make this possible, Dr. Dudzik takes measurements and creates models of your upper and lower jaw during a preliminary visit.

Advantage of Getting Dentures

An advantage of immediate dentures is that the wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period. However, bones and gums can shrink over time, especially during the first six months after the removal of teeth. When gums shrink, immediate dentures may require rebasing or relining to fit properly. A conventional denture can then be made, once the tissues have healed. Healing may take at least 6-8 weeks.

Partial Dentures

Removable partial dentures usually consist of replacement teeth attached to gum-colored plastic bases, which are connected by metal framework. These, in turn, attach to your natural teeth with metal clasps or devices called precision attachments. Precision attachments are more aesthetic than metal clasps, as they are nearly invisible.

Crowns on your natural teeth may improve the fit of a removable partial denture, and they are usually required with attachments. It is important to note, however, that partials with precision attachments generally cost more than those with metal clasps.
